Nearly 30 years ago, Gayla Cooper felt reluctant to spend even one day ministering to children in a Tijuana orphanage. However, after meeting a group of children from the orphanage, Gayla’s heart was touched so deeply that she packed her bags and moved to Mexico to work in the orphanage full time.
Meanwhile, Scott Congdon traveled to the same orphanage with a community service group from his college. The children had a profound impact on Scott. He soon returned to deliver boxes of food and clothing for the children.
Scott and Gayla soon discovered they shared a dream: to minister to the poor in Mexico. In March of 1980, Scott and Gayla together founded Amor Ministries-and the rest is history!
Scott and Gayla, along with a full-time Amor Team, carry out their commitment and passion for helping the poorest of the poor in Mexico, South Africa and the San Carlos Apache Reservation. Amor Ministries mobilizes volunteers and works with local churches in the United States, Mexico, South Africa and Arizona to respond directly to the physical and spiritual poverty by providing the Amor Mission Trip.
So, what does an Amor Mission Trip entail? The short answer: HOUSE BUILDING; but it doesn’t stop there. A few things you might experience on a trip with Amor would include: sweat, outhouses, joy, new languages, family, team building, mud, sore muscles, bucket showers and new friends. Then there’s the indescribable knowledge that in just a couple days your hands have contributed to helping transform a family’s life forever. Oh yeah, let’s not forget your own!
