Guess what…I survived another summer in student ministry! And here’s better news: YOU DID TOO! This is a good moment to stand a cheer for ourselves, right?

The incredible mission trips, the pranks that went too far, and everything in between. Why is this such an accomplishment? Only youthworkers will understand. While others took a break, we are breaking a sweat in one of the most demanding and randomly intense seasons of the year! However, in the next several weeks, I will be making key decisions for the sake of sanity.

Decision #1: When students are busy in the first few weeks of school, I won’t be.

I am going to do my job with excellence and then I am going home to get my family settled into the school year. I’m not adding any extras or starting anything new.

Decision #2: I will finally be cleaning my office!

Do you ever feel like your messy office is a reflection of what is going on inside? I do! Time to bring back some order and find out what is underneath that fast food cup that has been sitting in your office for the last few weeks.

Decision #3: I am going to schedule the rest of my vacation for this year.

We are probably going to head back home with the family and I will be catching a Family Life Marriage Conference with my wife. Vacation is an excellent way to regroup after a busy summer investing in teens. What are you going to do to replenish yourself?

Decision #4: I am going to be outside more.

I live in Houston – it is insanely hot and humid in the summertime. Being such a fan of the outdoors, running outside at night and using my fire pit a few times a week will be good for the soul. What do you love that you haven’t had time for this summer?

Decision #5: I will engage our seniors to make this school year everything the Lord wants it to be.

I will also be watching out for our youngest students to be sure they are connecting with adult leaders and feel that they belong and are being sought out.

Decision #6: I am going to make early decisions for next summer in student ministry.

After gathering feedback and with summer fresh on our minds, now is a perfect time to explore the possibilities for next summer – taking into consideration graduation, Father’s Day, and the Fourth of July.

Decision #7: I will reconnect with friends.

My friends outside of student ministry might feel compelled to fill out a missing person report on me!
