Written as a type of memoir, Calhoun discusses his life as a professional musician and pastor. This text is written to and about evangelical Christians. The strength–and weakness–of this text is the personal storytelling.

Calhoun’s testimonies give powerful insight; however, his view is very narrow. For, example, he chooses to define Christianity as evangelical because “I simply know evangelicalism best.”

The text lacks a variety of sources, which would make it more authoritative. Therefore, to get the most from this text, it is best understood as the memoir of a musician/pastor who seeks to bridge the two worlds in terms of racial understanding.
