Francis Chan
David C. Cook, 2012, DVD, 15 minutes, $14.99
What can the Last Supper tell us about how the church could look today? This is the jumping off point of the final installment of Francis Chan’s artistically rich BASIC Series. In BASIC.Communion, Chan speaks on themes of fellowship, community, the Lord’s Supper and being filled as believers.
As with previous films and much of his writings, Chan is intensely interested in the early church. During his engaging talk, he explores the implications inherent in the first communion and in the breaking of bread throughout Acts. What does the intimacy of these early iterations of the Lord’s Supper mean? To Chan, it points to the true purpose of biblical church: to be fully committed to an intimate group of believers, and together to follow, fear and find nourishment in the Lord.
One neat aspect of this series is that while Fran talks, a nonlinguistic, visually compelling story is told. In this video, the three travelers have arrived at a beach community where they are growing in their enjoyment of each other and the enigmatic Teacher figure seen in previous films. These films are sure to inspire discussion on their own; but just in case, there is a reflection guide included with the DVD, and reproducible versions of the guide are available for download from Chan’s website.
