Even in our culture of equalization, we all know that males and females are different. Just as Dr. Dobson nailed an accurate understanding of young men in his book Bringing Up Boys, so does this effort reflect a master understanding of who young women are biblically, physically, emotionally, spiritually and relationally.
Considering the roles we all play on a girl as she’s growing up, Dobson specifically targets parents and the impact a mother and father can play in intentionally (and unintentionally) helping her develop. Beginning with a solid deconstruction of society, the book progresses through a core understanding of what makes females unique so that in later chapters the application points have a motive.
As a recent father of a girl, I eagerly ate it all up and found myself wanting more—not because this work is incomplete—but because even in its exhaustion I know there is so much I specifically need to learn about my daughter. Thankfully, I know what to pay attention to now. Youth workers and families need this understanding.
