As if being a teen wasn’t already tough enough, today’s youngsters have a new dilemma: Whether to allow their parents into their online network of “friends.”
Moms and dads, who are growing increasingly computer-savvy to keep up with their plugged-in children, are creating their own MySpace and Facebook profiles and petitioning their sons and daughters to be their friends. Some, in fact, are friending their children’s real friends.
Mike Yeamans, a 19-year-old student at James Madison University in Virginia, was so aghast when his dad wanted to befriend him via Facebook that he and his friends launched a group called “What Happens in College Stays in College: Keep Parents Off Facebook!” More than 500 people have signed on thus far.
“I love my parents,” Yeamans says, adding, “I chose to go away to school so I could experience a little freedom.” (The Washington Post)
