Godly young men are scarce these days. There are several books about their absence and prescriptions for what churches should be doing about it. There are not, however, a variety of resources that are addressing the matter head on and practically.
Brian Mills and Nathan Wagnon have written an 8-week devotional, Checkpoints: A Tactical Guide to Manhood, for young men to walk through in hopes it will guide them into godly manhood. Wagnon draws on his experience as an infantry officer in the U.S. military to create an analogy for young men to see their lives as a mission with particular checkpoints. The book is designed for a mature man to lead an individual or a group of boys as they intentionally approach and face each section. Each checkpoint is accompanied by six days of homework that should take any young man about 15 minutes to do in preparation for the conclusion of the section.
Checkpoints is not written for fathers and sons as many of the other likemided resources on the market. If you are working with a group of boys who don’t have great godly fathers, this might be a great resource for you to consider. However, it would be to your advantage to keep in mind how you might bring the manly hopes of Checkpoints into a discussion with your students’ whole families.
