Among cosmetic surgeries, which according to some reports has increased nearly 500 percent in the past decade, the hot new procedure is to reduce back fat, especially the area just above the bra line. The majority of patients requesting this surgery are middle-aged women who aspire (again, in most cases) to wear form-fitting attire, tank tops, sheer blouses and other clingy upper body garments sans unsightly bulges.

Discussion Starters
1.) As the story indicates, most people who seek this procedure are middle-aged women. As role models for younger women, what do such cosmetic surgeries convey to female students? Do they consider this a means of taking care of one’s health and appearance or only a matter of vanity?
2.) The story also indicates “masculine interest” in cosmetic surgeries is increasing. What are your male students saying about such procedures; are they advocates or detractors? Why?
3.) What do Bible passages, such as
Doctors and fitness trainers argue the middle of the back is an area of the body that cannot be “exercised away,” which leads even the most dedicated aerobic instructors to frustration and to seek alternatives, such as the bra-line back lift.
Dr. Joseph Hunstad has worked with a small test group of seven women to perfect the procedure and has completed the procedure on 20 patients so far.
The incision to contour the “rolls and folds” is strategically placed so that it will be hidden by a bra or bikini top, and Hunstad says reports have been “uniformly positive.”
