A daily menu of five emphases can help people feel better about themselves and improve mental health and well being, as well as head off financial insecurity. (Story continues below.)

Discussion Starters:
1.) As the story indicates, a well-rounded life can help ensure greater happiness. Have balancing each of these fives types of activities been a focus of the work you do with your students?
2.) One might’ve guessed there would be opponents, as well as proponents, of such a recommendation. Why might critics call these activities “banal,” say happiness is subjective, and accuse proponents of “trivializing serious mental illness”?
3.) Study Ecclesiastes 3 and John 13:34-35; John 15:12-17; Romans 12:10; Romans 13:8; 1 John 1:3; 1 John 3:11; Psalms 19:5; Proverbs 14:23; Proverbs 19:15; Romans 12:2; Proverbs 1:5; 2 Corinthians 9:5; Hebrews 10:2 and other verses that come to mind to find out God’s perspective on what this article is suggesting.

The Great Britain’s Foresight, a government think-tank, recently announced in its Mental Capital and Wellbeing Report, compiled by 400 scientists, that building relationships, staying active, cultivating a sense of curiosity, continued learning and a philanthropic spirit all contribute to a contented lifestyle.

Likened to eating daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables, this list of five daily activities can help stave off depression, as well as debt.

Critics have said the government has no right to “prescribe individual behavior”; however, the recommendations seem to be commonsense approaches to leading a well-balanced life.
