Do you want to change the world? If so stop reading and change it already!
I remember watching teenagers walk past my home. They were on their way to school. I was on my way to work.
I didn’t know these teens. They were neither a part of my church, nor in the city where my church was. Although I had been a youth pastor for years, I really had no idea how to reach them.
Don’t get me wrong. I had tried events. I had tried evangelism training. However, the kids I saw that morning seldom came to such events.
Perhaps you could say I judged them, but I feel as if it was more of a feeling of conviction in the deepest part of my heart that the teens I saw that morning needed a place to be accepted, cared for and loved.
In that moment I failed. I failed by typing up a proposal to the board on becoming more community friendly. I failed by creating a teaching series on how to do outreach. I failed by not simply walking up to those teens and saying hello.
For any of you who have a heart for young people outside the walls of your church, I want to encourage you that IT IS POSSIBLE.
It is possible to see change. It is possible for the heart of God to be revealed. It is possible to do outreach.
The barrier is not difficult to see, but it is difficult to overcome. The barrier is not the church. The barrier oftentimes is you. Correct me if I’m wrong, but when we mention the concept of outreach, we talk about youth events, rallies and retreats. Are not all of these things that we invite teens to come to? Where is the outreach in that?
If you want to do outreach, I challenge you to get up off your chair right now and get out there.
