Teens and cell phones don’t mix—at least not while behind the wheel, according to the state of California. The state recently joined 15 other states in making it illegal for teens to use cell phones and other electronic devices while driving. The law will take effect July 2008.

Violators will fork over $20 for the first offense and a whopping $50 for subsequent offenses.

“The simple fact is that teenage drivers are more easily distracted,” said Gov. Arnold Schwarzennegger. “They are young, inexperienced and have a slower reaction time. We want to eliminate any extra distractions so they can focus on paying attention to the road and being good drivers.”
