If you are a leader of a high school small group looking for a book that will stimulate thought and discussion around important moral questions, Ethix is a resource to consider. Each chapter examines an issue (ranging from abortion to war) from a Christian perspective, with tools included to guide review, reflection and discussion. In an effort to help adolescents navigate a confusing world, McDowell challenges readers to “think through some of today’s most pressing moral issues so you can take a stand for what is right and be the type of person God wants you to be.” To accomplish this task, McDowell lays a useful, compassionate, Bible-based groundwork of traditional Christian apologetics. Depending on the orientation of your group, you may need to take the conversation in a different direction from McDowell’s primarily modernist approach built around offering reductive, rational responses to the questions of a postmodern world.
