In a world where feeling beautiful, loved and worthy seems to be a daily challenge for teenage girls, Staci Eldredge’s Free to Be Me is a welcomed resource. As an adaptation from her book Becoming Myself, she has written this specifically for girls ages 15 to 18 with the hope that they will understand true freedom is found in being the person God created them to be. Eldredge does a great job focusing on the heart, reminding us that it is central to everything we do and that we need to guard it diligently. Throughout the book, she asks some tough questions that force readers to be self-reflective and honest about their own journeys. Although the overall concept of the book is great and the honesty of Eldredge’s stories is appreciated, I felt the book was a little scattered, disjointed and wordy at times. I struggled to stay engaged and felt as if the reflection questions were challenging to process. There are a couple of standout chapters, including one on understanding your story and one on understanding how your hormones affect your life.
