This is a biting commentary on the modern church from the “emergent” perspective. The authors tackle a wide range of questions. They start out asking basic theological questions such as “Why the Bible?” and “Is forgiveness real?” before moving to touchy societal questions such as “Are there gay Christians?” and “Is it wrong to take a job in a bar?”

Of course, being from the emergent perspective, the authors do not presume to answer the questions outright. Instead, they are content to create meaningful dialogue between themselves (the “new school”) and the modern church (the “old school”). At other times the authors come across as simply smug and self-righteous in their own postmodern way.

This thought-provoking book is worth a read but probably not for those who are easily offended.
