This cerebral game works well as an ice-breaker for a large group and requires very little set-up/ preparation. Begin by creating a list of 20 to 25 people (celebrities and people in the news) who might be difficult to determine as living or dead. Think of recent deaths, for example, or individuals who are older. Some examples of your list might include: Morgan Freeman (living), Billy Graham (living), Johnny Carson (deceased), Harper Lee (living), etc.
To play, read a name from your list and ask everyone to decide if that person is living or dead by either holding a thumb up (living) or down (dead). Those who guess correctly continue in the game (and to the next name) and those who guess incorrectly must sit down. The game moves quickly but does require some quick thought.
