The Golden Compass, which opens Dec. 7, seems to be succeeding in an area where few films do, and that is to spark the ire of atheists as well as Christians.
Based on the first book of the His Dark Materials fantasy trilogy by British author Philip Pullman, the PG-13-rated movie has raised concerns due to its anti-Christian overtone. On the other hand, Ellen Johnson, president of American Atheists, says the film isn’t “watered down” and “anti-God” enough.
Many are concerned unsuspecting parents will allow their children to see the movie, as well as succumb to the retail products related to the movie, thereby introducing their children to humanism, atheism, and ultimate damnation. Debbie Elliott Frieden, co-founder of TeachWithMovies.org, says families have nothing to fear.
