Gospel-Powered Parenting: How the Gospel Shapes and Transforms Parenting
William P. Farley
P&R Publishing, 2009, 234 pp., $12.99, PRPBooks.com
Rather than writing yet another book on parenting techniques, Farley sets out to help instill a cross-centered mindset from which techniques naturally will flow. The gospel, he asserts, is all we need to parent effectively. Thankfully, he walks through many aspects of parenting (discipline, teaching, marriage, etc.) and shows how the gospel can shape each.
I knew this book was special when (several chapters in) Farley spent an entire chapter on God’s holiness (including His wrath) and the next chapter on God’s grace. The more we grasp these two things, Farley says, the more the gospel will grip us; as a result, we will become more obsessed with the cross and its implications for our parenting.
This book gives quality, well-illustrated theology and practical advice. Read it, then give it to the parents of your youth.
