Hidden Worldviews: Eight Critical Stories that Shape Our Lives
Steve Wilkens and Mark L. Sanford
IVP Academic, 2009, 218 pp., $22.00, IVPress.com
How do you craft a worldview? The authors examine eight common worldviews (individualism, consumerism, nationalism, moral relativism, scientific naturalism, new age, postmodern tribalism and therapy) found in American culture and in the Christian church for areas of compatibility and disagreements with Christian beliefs.
Wilkens and Sanford briefly yet comprehensively explain each worldview’s core beliefs. These chapters can be useful as discussion starters about core biblical beliefs and as a tool to learn to critique cultural values. The two concluding chapters on the formation of a Christian worldview are less helpful. The final two chapters do not build on the structure established in their discussion of the other worldviews, which makes their discussion of the components of a Christian worldview disjointed and impersonal.
