His Princess: Girl Talk with God
Sheri Rose Shepherd
Revell, 2010, 172pp, $14.99
This devotional takes 40 thoughts about life as a teen girl and approaches them from a biblical angle. The author relates her battle with bulimia and her struggle to win approval as a teenager, to knowing God’s love and her identity in Christ.
Beauty is a key theme throughout the book, but other topics include purity, finding Mr. Right and forgiveness. Each chapter contains a thematic issue, often drawn from the author’s experience, followed by a love letter from God and a Scripture verse. The love letters include affirmation of biblical promises written in everyday language and urge the reader to glorify God through friendship, actions and desires. Each section can be read in just a few minutes yet does not dilute the biblical message. The commands of obeying God and glorifying Him are refreshing to see in a teen girl’s devotional. While this book focuses on affirmation, it retains substance.
This book may not appeal to everyone at first. The love-letter style and the heavy focus on beauty could be off-putting to those already comfortable with their looks or those who do not place as high a priority on makeup and pretty clothes. However, this book would be great for those young women who may struggle with these issues.
