“As for me and my house, we shall serve the Lord” (Josh. 24:15).
A few years ago, while vacationing with the family, we found ourselves off the beaten path, driving through small towns and hamlets lined by cornfields. Suddenly, as we approached one town, we noted a sign along the road which read: If you lived here, you’d be home now.
I thought about this place as we drove away, wondering what type of history, culture and values had created this community and made it a special town. What would someone want to live there? Why would people not want to leave?
As we work to create spiritual homes for our teenagers, we would do well to remember we also are creating connections that give teenagers a sense of belonging. If they want to return, or if they don’t want to leave the youth group, there will need to be special bonds, relevant conversations, deep friendships. Surface expressions—just lights and action—will not suffice. A foundation will need to be laid. There will have to be a real and discovered home.
Think about these things this week as you lay the foundation for your youth ministry. What type of home are you creating for the teenagers? Is it a home where teenagers can find a connection with God, with others, with real mentors? Is there a caring community in which teenagers will feel safe and secure and able to be themselves?
As you explore these questions this week you may think of new ways to create community—and to make your home for teenagers all the more wonderful and enticing.
