“And the word became flesh and lived among us” (John 1:14).
When I was in college, our family hosted a student from China. This experience was beneficial in many ways. We learned some Chinese vocabulary, customs and traditions, while our student learned about American customs and ideas. In essence, we all formed new bonds of friendship—and our household became bigger and more aware of the bonds that all people share.
As we enter another Christmas season, it is most remarkable to consider the beauty and wonder of Christ living among us: in our homes, through our work, and in our hearts. When we consider how faith breaks down barriers between nationalities and traditions, we also can see how the Christian faith produces new bonds of friendship. In essence, the waters of baptism are stronger than blood. We discover we are part of the amazing family of God.
For many people—perhaps some teenagers in our youth groups—this Christmas affirmation is the most amazing and needed of all. We are part of the household of God, and those teenagers who feel alone, afraid or isolated can find great comfort and strength in the message of Christ’s love.
Christ lives among us—how remarkable! Plus, there is no aspect of life where this grace and love cannot be known.
