Inside a Cutter’s Mind: Understanding and Helping Those Who Self-Injure
Jerusha Clark with Dr. Earl Henslin
NavPress, 2007, 240 pp., $14.99
It’s refreshing to find such a well-balanced approach to a heartbreaking subject such as self-injury through cutting. The authors are distinctly Christian at their core, yet these materials do not hold back from exploring the scientific components of self-injury. This includes medical and spiritual approaches to treatment, such as EMDR and theophostics.
This isn’t light reading by any means, and you may have to study the same page for lengthy periods to understand exactly what is being explained. However, other sections offer amazing truths and biblical studies on how to help cutters live in the reality of who they are as God’s children. The appendices resource conversations and opportunities you can offer those who struggle as an alternative to their habit.
If you’re going to educate yourself on this topic at all, this truly is the book you need in order to gain the best perspective.
