For many years, American colleges were seen as hostile toward religious students, but recent revival has not only made it safe to be known as a Christian – it’s even cool.
Campus organizations, such as Campus Crusade for Christ or the United Methodist Church’s Navigators, hold weekly pizza parties, where students bow their heads and pray before they eat. This means that instead of falling away from church when they leave home for college, students say they are much more likely to be involved in their religious community.
Recent activities, such as guns in schools and terrorist attacks cause students to look for a source of reassurance; Wesley House is inclusive toward gays and lesbians, as well as reach out to Muslim and anti-war groups; and there’s an increasing realization that Christians can be intellectuals, as well. The fact differing viewpoints can co-exist actually fosters bonds among co-eds with many students admitting they have good discussions.
