Have you ever been listening to a song when suddenly the words just seem to speak to you? You might have heard this song many times, but this time it has a different meaning.
We were traveling today to see some friends of ours who are moving to Charleston. We wanted to see them one last time before they moved. As we were driving, I was listening to a song I had not heard in a while by Susan Ashton, titled “Land of Nod.” She sang about how we as Christians have gotten too comfortable in our churches and Christian walks.
She says:
“Cause we are comfortable here in our slumber
“Lullabyed by the heartbeat of God
“But we can’t be alive in His number
“While living in the land of Nod…”
As I listened to those words, I really began to think about where we are as a nation. I think words she chose are so true of us today. So many of our churches are filled with people who are asleep and not aware the society around us is in decay. I wanted to know more, so I went to the Bible to see how this song lined up with Scripture.
After Cain killed Abel and was declared a “fugitive and vagabond” by God (Gen. 4:12), the Bible says he “went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod” (Gen. 4:16). It was in this land that “Cain knew his wife” (Gen. 4:17), and it was here that his son, Enoch, was born. The meaning of the name Nod (“wandering”) in all probability was given because God told Cain he was to be a wanderer upon the earth. This is true about what is going on in our world today. So many who are called by the name of Christ, are wandering through life, having no idea what they believe or why they believe it. You may know some people such as that in your church or youth group. It could even be you. We cannot let this happen.
As the lyrics above say, we cannot be truly alive while we are living in a state of slumber. It is up to us to sound the wake up call. We must lead the way to a more vibrant and productive society. We must hold each other accountable and help break this curse of wandering through this life just existing. We must be made alive again. We must step outside of our comfort zones and engage our world. We need to lead a revolution of transformation in our schools, work places and our churches.
If you are interested in helping lead this revolution, get out there and transform you world!
