Merchant takes his readers on a profound journey to Ethiopia, New York City, a Gay Pride festival, even Waxahachie, Texas, all on an expedition to tackle the “culture wars” and discover why a faith that stresses love has become so divisive.
With his film crew in tow, (Merchant has made a movie of his experiences with the same title) he conducts interviews with anyone from pedestrians to Tony Campolo, Al Franken, and Sen. Rick Santorum, among others, trying to create an open dialogue between people with different beliefs.
Along with attractive full-color formatting and dramatic encounters with a variety of characters, Merchant shows us his real struggle with division and helps us ask the question, “Are we trying to fit Jesus into what we’re doing as people, as a country? Or are we trying to fit into what Jesus is doing?”
