Worried their children might be exposed to too much sugar, R-rated movies, spotty supervision and worse, a growing number of parents are forgoing sleepovers in favor of safer, more supervised and less sleep-deprived get-togethers.
These parents call them “sleep unders,” “breakfast bashes” and a host of other names, but the goal is still the same: Kids gather for late-night/early-morning get-togethers, but they head home when it’s time to go to bed.
“In the old days, it used to be that you would build up to a sleepover and you knew everything about that family,” says mom and author Stacy DeBroff. “Now, a more vigilant kind of hyper-concerned parent says unknown dangers may lurk. I don’t know every variable…so I’m going to hover and basically swoop in and take you out.” (Associated Press)
