Nudge: Awakening Each Other to the God Who’s Already There
Leonard Sweet
David C. Cook, 2010, 336 pp., $8.99

The phrase “God told me to do this” can cause others to raise an eyebrow, but the idea of a nudge is simply about being awake to what God is doing in another person or situation. Leonard Sweet explores how this plays out in sharing our faith, from the moments we’re led to make a sacrifice for another or simply begin a conversation from which we might normally run.

Sweet’s approach involves a broadening of familiar biblical passages on evangelism in order to re-detail them. He effectively removes the formula we may resort to in lieu of becoming more attentive to the Holy Spirit. For every necessary deconstruction, however, he offers hopeful and inspiring reconstruction to “sense and shine” what the Lord is doing around us.

The size of the book may intimidate younger readers, but its organic approach to evangelism may provide the motivation. Whether you read this yourself in order to generate conversation within youth group lessons or read it with your volunteers, take time to take in what likely will become an invaluable resource in a postmodern culture.
