Tyler Clementi’s last Facebook post said, “Jumping off the gw bridge sorry.” The college student committed suicide after two other students streamed a live video of him having sex with a man. Ironically, Clementi jumped off the George Washington bridge following an online harassment incident that happened at Rutgers University at the same time the New Jersey school was launching a campus-wide program about civility.
A brief YouTube video highlights the incident.
Clementi was a shy, quiet student who played viola. His roommate streamed the sex session by using a camera in a dorm room and inviting viewers via Twitter. Like other schools, Rutgers was trying to encourage students to be more civil when the episode happened. What can you do with your kids to help them understand the risks of online harassment?
