Any book that begins with a publisher’s pre-emptive warning captures my attention. What the book attempts to achieve will capture yours. The book investigates and questions the scriptural validity of many ecclesial staples such as the sermon, the pastor, how the sacraments are administered and even the church building itself.
Each chapter helps readers along with deeper Q & A at the end of each chapter, anticipating our questions. These sections will be helpful for group discussion, as well as individual study. A discussion guide is available from their Web site.
At times the book feels almost too matter-of-fact as it peppers the reader with footnotes to prove each point.
What the church may look like in the near future is unknown, but this book certainly will increase your scope of church history, polity and characters in the unfolding drama called the church.
