Path of Purity is a well-written update to True Love Waits. It serves as a guide for parents to recognize and prepare for markers their children will experience as they grow in biblical purity. Youth workers seeking to develop a partnership with the parents might use this guide as a talking point to begin asking parents how the church can support their primary role in developing a heart for purity in the lives of their children.

This is pretty typical True Love Waits fare. The book is a good outline of the information that is presented, but I wish there was more developed content. I like the title of the book and the concept behind it, but I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t more there to work with. I like the way the book integrates the idea of purity and teaching purity from childhood through adulthood. I think the concept of parents starting early and then providing constant, consistent and ongoing involvement and influence was the key part of the material in the book. This book is a good parent resource–especially for busy parents who might not have time initially for more than the bullet points. This book could be the basis of a parenting class. I like that this book focuses on the heart issue of purity more than the mechanics of sexual abstinence.

True Love Waits has been around a long time, with many ups and downs. For the longest time, the movement has been associated with students; but now, with a renewed vision for Purity, True Love Waits connects with parents as never before. This new book, Path of Purity: A Family Guide, is devoted to equipping parents with tools for how to teach biblical principles concerning living a life of purity. The book is broken up according to the stages of development a child goes through. Each chapter is then further broken up into four categories: a description of the stage, what youth need to know during this time, what parents need to know about their kids, and tips for handling bumps in the road. This is a book youth leaders should go through, as well, and can be easily used for a parent seminar or training on the topics of purity, developmental stages and God’s call to be set apart. In fact, it would benefit each youth leader to get a copy of this book for every parent in their student ministry!

I have to admit that when I first saw this material was associated with True Love Waits, I was shocked. Having been in student ministry for 15 years and experiencing TLW 1.0 and 2.0, I didn’t realize it was still around. After reviewing the resource, I feel that it is a great tool for youth workers to pass on to families to promote and introduce abstinence, as well as a lifestyle of purity. The book is laid out in several purity markers that coincide with various life stages that are important to a child and how to handle/introduce purity within these stages. One thing I appreciate is that the book does not start at adolescence, but starts instead with infancy and works through all life stages. I think this is a must, especially in today’s society; this allows families to begin the discussions at a young age in an appropriate way, which will be beneficial when children reache an age where sexuality and purity become an issue. So, while I was misinformed about TLW, I think it still has a lot to offer the youth and families with whom we are working today. Get this book to pass on to your teens’ parents!
