Many leaders lament the prolific use of cell phones during worship, youth gatherings and retreats; but while this is now a common thread in our cultural norms, there are ways to cope with this phenomenon while also giving teenagers (and adults) the opportunity to peel away from the technology to focus on face-to-face interactions and conversations.
Consider that at many restaurants and sporting events there is a coat-checking system, where for as little as $1 or $2, people hand over their coats to Service and Security, receive a corresponding check number, and then retrieve the coat at the end of the event. It’s a safe and effective way to be hands free at the event. A cell-phone check can work the same way. Simply create a secure compartmental system of corresponding numbers, invite people to check their cell phones or other technology at the door, and retrieve their items after the event. While many people have become attached to their technology, it is amazing to see how quickly most will surrender their phones if others are doing it and embrace the opportunity to go without the technology for a period of time.
This can be done as a service at weekly events or used a fundraiser at larger events. Give it a try.
