Americans are pretty fanatical about the Super Bowl. This televised event is a great excuse for social gatherings across the country, including those in youth ministry.
Here are some tips from Jonathan McKee’s Resource eZine for a Super Bowl Party with food, fun and prizes.
(Click here for last year’s party idea and Super Bowl Quiz.)
Here is this year’s idea:
WHERE:
Find a place to host the party, such as your church’s youth room, rental facility or a church member’s home. Unlike previous years, there are NO restrictions on the size of the screen or the number of screens you can use. Think BIG!!
WHEN:
Super Bowl Sunday is Feb. 1, 2009. (NBC is broadcasting this year’s Super Bowl. The game starts at 6 p.m. EST.)
PRIZES:
For those who do best on the Quiz, provide dinner certificates, iTunes gift cards, ski tickets, sports memorabilia, free registration on an upcoming youth ministry trip and more all work great for prizes. If you don’t have resources to provide those kinds of prizes, candy bars, snack foods, party favors from a local discount retailer will suffice. Let your students know ahead of time prizes will be awarded; they’re a great draw for the party, as well as for outreach!
COST:
It’s gotta be free! Host a basic pot luck; have guys bring soft drinks, chips, etc.; have girls bring paper products and plastic ware, or vice versa.
SUPER BOWL DAY AGENDA:
The agenda for this event is pretty easy. You give distribute the quiz (see below) as they enter the party. They have to fill it out before the game begins because some of the questions have to do with the beginning of the game. Don’t allow anyone to fill out the quiz past kickoff as they’ll have an unfair advantage. Then, just let everyone enjoy the game. You can also interject a few “Super Bowl Challenges” from “Up Front Games” and give a few prizes away. At the end, tally up the quizzes and give away the grand prizes. (IMPORTANT NOTE: Yes, YOU have to note certain stats during the game to complete your answer key, then tally the quizzes at the party so you can award the winner immediately.)
