Profiles in Black seeks to make a connection between the hip-hop generation and its past. Presented in chronological order, this text presents African-American history in the military, education, sports, politics, the arts and the church. It gives brief biographies of influential people, phat facts sections that give quick snippets about featured people, 411 sections that give bulleted points on a person’s life, and “Did You Know…?” sections that give interesting facts about individuals.
This text can be used with youth as an introduction to African-American history; however, it should be noted that more than 400 years of history cannot be covered in 114 pages.
