Secrets to Parenting Your Adult Child
Nancy Williams
Bethany House, 2011, 216 pp., $12.99
As the emerging generation enters into adulthood, many aren’t heading into the world as quickly as their predecessors. Even if they do, Nancy Williams says parenting needs to continue even as children grow up. Her encouragement to parents is to create a fresh start that acknowledges the changing circumstances and their effect on the relationship.
Williams provides useful insights about how to become a coach without taking control, such as utilizing open-ended questions that help you better talk with your adult child. Her contention is that by better clarifying what is happening around your son or daughter, you can better clarify what is happening in your relationship and any boundaries that must be set. Even in situations involving in-laws, such as your child’s family coming to live with you, things can work out well if handled correctly.
I appreciate Nancy’s bullet-point ideas and call to pray our way through such challenges. By letting God parent us now, we can better parent our kids at any age.
