When we hear the words “Pro-Life” we, most likely, associate the phrase with the fight against abortion. Our thoughts conjure up a picture of conception, pregnancy, and birth. We gravitate towards arguments and scriptures to back up the truth. Our minds drift to countless stories of mothers and children reclaiming their lives after abortion. All of which reign true to the Pro-Life Movement. However, today, I want to come at this from another angle. The sanctity of life is not solely about saving the life of an unborn child, if that is our only goal, then we are missing something. The sanctity of life is about honoring the God-given gift of human life and all that He intended for it.
The beauty of humanity is the uniqueness of every individual. God fashioned and formed you, me, and the guy in the car next to me on I-95 as exceptional beings. The God of the universe created us in His glorious image and breathed life into our lungs (Genesis 1:27, 2:7). He foreordained our days before we were even born (Psalm 139:16). His righteous right hand made us into “his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). Life, instituted by God, is meant to have significance, therefore, it should be honored.
Honoring the life that God gifted us is simple. It is defined one of the greatest commandments Jesus preached “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39). Horning life is simply just loving one another because of our love for God. Humanity is rooted in love. It was created out of the love of God, then the love of parents, and should be continued in love. Human beings need to be loved, nurtured, educated, encouraged, and purposed. We are to see one another as equal, no matter the age, gender, or ethnicity. The Pro-Life movement was founded to emphasize the importance of life. Why? Because life is immeasurably more important than anything else. If you don’t value life, you will not value others. But if you reset your outlook you will begin to see the potential in every human being. It will be clear that life is beautifully designed by God and predestined for every human being to live to the fullest. Because God intended life to be deep, intricate, and significant. From the moment of conception to a last breath, life was meant to have purposeful significance.
Human life has immense value, and as Christians, we have a significant spiritual value, too. As our church’s fight for the life of the unborn, take time to remind your congregation, your youth group, and your family, what life is about! Human life was created intentionally to showcase God’s glory. Let us not forget that the fight for life of an unborn child is a fight for the entirety of their life.
“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man, he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.”
Acts 17:24-28
