A study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests seriously rough childhoods can translate into truncated lives. Children who go through repeated episodes of physical or emotional trauma live to be, on average, about 60 years old — 19 years less than our average lifespan these days. The trauma itself is not completely at fault. Experts say that those who go through six or more instances of trauma — which includes physical, emotional or sexual abuse — tend to be more likely to engage in life-shortening habits, like smoking, drinking to excess or using drugs.
