To say that John B. Hayes cares about poor people is kind of like saying Jack Bauer cares about killing terrorists: a gross understatement. In 1984, Hayes moved to the poorest part of Southern California, launching a holistic ministry called innerChange. In sub-merge, Hayes promotes an incarnational approach when ministering to the poor, going and living among poor people in order to show them the love of Christ. And, according to Hayes and various stories written by his staff at innerChange, this sort of sacrifice is worth it.
What makes sub-merge a must read is not its immediate application for most youth ministries. If you apply sub-merge in your youth group, you’ll probably have parents calling for your head. But it is Hayes’ ability to inspire action and refute easy answers that will impact both youth and youth workers to change their world.
