When Hannah Powell-Auslam first felt the lump in her chest, she didn’t worry much about it and she certainly didn’t tell her parents at first. She was, well, a little embarrassed about it. But eventually she did, and when they took Hannah in to have it checked out, the doctors told her the lump was a rare form of breast cancer. Hannah was just 10. “I was just, how could this happen?” Hannah said. “I just want to be a normal kid. I want to go back to school, play sports, hang out with my friends.” Hannah, now 11, has since undergone a mastectomy, a separate surgery to remove for cancerous lymph nodes and 12 weeks of chemotherapy. She’s lost most of her hair. But her prognosis now is good. Girls Hannah’s age aren’t at great risk for cancer: Hannah’s case was, literally, a one-in-a-million bad break. But it does happen. If children notice anything amiss with their bodies, Hannah says that kids should “tell their parents right away.” (Good Morning America)
