As our high school students reach graduation and prepare to head off for college, it is so important for us to point them toward resources that can help them navigate the new experiences that await them. The College Adventure Handbook by Rob Stennett and Joe Kirkendall is a good college prep book to consider getting into the hands of your seniors.
The book is written in five parts that address different issues that all college students face. Part 1 deals with issues specific to incoming students during the first few weeks of college. Part 2 addresses faith issues. Part 3 covers some thoughts about navigating the dating scene. Part 4 tackles some of the more serious situations in which students can find themselves. Part 5 provides some food for thought on some issues that won’t necessarily impact every student but could.
The book doesn’t need to be read cover to cover but can be picked up anywhere and used as a resource for situations as they arise. Each issue covered is written in a way that utilizes humor and the author’s experiences to bring good thoughts and advice to the reader. The ideas they give are easy for students to put into practice, as well as navigate the college years. Another positive is that each issue is a quick, easy read that will fit in well amid all the reading and homework our students face.
The College Adventure Handbook is definitely something to recommend that parents give to their seniors or for youth workers to consider giving as a year-end gift for their high school graduates.
