The Faithful Parent: A Biblical Guide to Raising a Family
Martha Peace and Stuart W. Scott
P&R Publishing, 2010, 256 pp., $14.99
Peace and Scott (authors of The Excellent Wife and The Faithful Husband, respectively) have come together to help parents raise children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Though this book is overflowing with practical, ready-to-use pointers, its goal is to help parents be faithful rather than successful.
In the early chapters, readers are guided through the infant, toddler, preschooler, school-age and teenage years. Advice here is age-appropriate: parents of toddlers learn how to spank a child appropriately; parents of teenagers study a chart of various manipulative behaviors and God-honoring parental responses.
Though these chapters would be plenty to ponder, there is more. One chapter warns of 15 different ways to be a “provoking parent”; another gives 30 days of devotions for use during dark seasons of parenting.
For anyone seeking biblical parenting material, this book will prove fruitful. I highly recommend it.
