Objective: To better understand the divinity of Jesus Christ by studying the description Jesus gave of Himself in the “I Am” statements recorded in the Gospel of John.
Introduction: Begin by making sure everyone knows each member of the group. Have everyone share his or her name, school; and if they could have a superpower, what they would choose?
Have you ever had a misconception (a wrong impression, poor judgment) about who someone was? Did someone have a misconception about you? What sort of impact did that have on you or on the other person?
Study
1. Read Matthew 16:13-14. According to these verses, what were misconceptions people had about who Jesus was? (Some said He was John the Baptist, others Elijah or Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.)
2. Read Mark 6:14-16. According to these verses, what were misconceptions people had about who Jesus was? (Some, including Herod, said He was John the Baptist resurrected, others thought He was Elijah or a prophet similar to those in the Old Testament.)
3. There are many different misconceptions about who Jesus was and is today, as well. Many don’t understand His being, nature and character. Can you think of any that you’ve heard others mention? (Jesus was just a good teacher, a good example, a role model, a religious leader or rebel.)
4. As Christians (followers of Jesus Christ), it is imperative (super important) for us to understand who Jesus is. Why? (How ridiculous would it be for us to devote our lives to following someone we didn’t know?) Throughout this study, we will hear Jesus Himself explain to us who He is by studying the various “I Am” statements seen in the Gospel of John.
Challenge
1. Spend some time in silent prayer asking God to prepare your heart to learn more and more about who Jesus is and to reveal to you any misconceptions you might have about Him.
2. Spend time as a small group sharing prayer requests with one another, as well.
3. Share with the group your intentions as a leader, to pray for them throughout this study. You can decide if you want them to give you specific requests or if you’ll just be praying for them in general; be sure to let them know you will be doing that for them!
