It’s been said God doesn’t give His power to a disobedient servant, in which case Ryan and Amanda Leak are one of God’s power couples. After the video of their “Surprise Wedding” went viral and they gained the attention of “Good Morning America,” “The Queen Latifah Show” and People magazine, they saw a very real need to address the idea of being in love with love, rejecting culture’s spin on love and follow hard after God’s intent and design for how two shall become one.
In their new book, The One: An Amazing Love Story Starts with You, they talk at length about their admiration and love for one another, but they remain humble enough to admit they only work as a couple because God is first in both their lives.
The book feels most suited for young adults, but it would work well in a high school discipleship group as Ryan and Amanda both have hearts for guiding young people into healthy, mature, God-honoring relationships.
They overcame odds associated with stereotypes that come with them both being minorities, from large cities, reared in a modern culture with all the ensuing influences, including Amanda being reared in a single-parent household. Regardless of those obstacles and challenges, Ryan discusses how to be a leader, and Amanda emphasizes become a whole and complete person in one’s own right without expecting another person to be the completion one might seek in a romantic relationship.
