The Switching Hour: Kids of Divorce Say Good-bye Again

This is a depressing read. How’s that for motivation? It’s not a comfortable world Flesberg investigates. Through the eyes and words of the children of divorce, The Switching Hour looks at the hour of transition that moves them from home to home, parent to parent and value system to value system. That hour is dreaded by the children forced to make the switch—hence the depressing nature of the book.
Divorce cuts once for the couple, it cuts every weekend for the kids. My awareness was deepened and my heart moved by reading the sad letters written by these kids of divorce. Of the eight chapters in the book, chapters 6 (“The Hour I Spend with God”) and 8 (“How Can I Help?”) are the most helpful and hopeful.
If you have students who are caught in this world of switching between divorced parents, this book would be a great read for you and their parents. The kids don’t need to read it—they already know the pain.
