Brazelton’s The Way I Am Wired is a multi-dimensional guide to help students discover their gifts, life mission and other unique qualities. Whether you are a youth worker leading a small group, a parent hoping to come alongside your child, or a student wanting to dive into a greater self-discovery, this author has something for you. The strongest publication of the bunch is the Student Devotional. This self-paced guide will take students through all 66 books of the Bible to encounter more than 200 Bible passages touching on myriad themes. The devotional will aide students in finding their own purpose as they uncover the grand story of God throughout the Bible. It is packed full of great questions and a regular feature called “Mulling Things Over” where students can journal, draw, brain dump or write a song based on what they have just learned. The devotional has great presentation, is quick to the point for a busy student culture, and steers clear of the cheesy and childlike resources of its kind.
The six-session DVD curriculum could be used completely on its own. The material comes across a little soft, uninspiring and light on Scripture. Some small changes in the camera work and a decent attention-getting intro could have gone a long way in the design of this resource. However, a lot of helpful information and guides are included with the curriculum and could be a very beneficial experience for students—especially younger high school students. The work ends on a high note with a fabulous session that helps students write a life mission statement and surrender that to God for His glory. The parent version of The Way I Am Wired captures a lot of the content of the DVD with built-in conversation starters to help facilitate at-home discussions. In the end, it is the Student Devotional that rises above the rest and is a must-get resource for high-end discipleship groups or student leadership teams.
