True is a 90-day devotional geared toward teens and based on the words of Jesus, using contemporary Bible translations. Each devo includes a verse; a basic, short commentary relating to contemporary life—nothing edgy or gripping, but not lame or thoughtless either; a prayer; a stone for the journey—a main point statement; and a “Final Word”—a verse from another part of the Bible.
I loaned True to my 16-year-old daughter to scan and offer feedback. She said, “This is by Melody Carlson, and I trust anything written by her. She’s an incredible writer. She explains hard subjects clearly.” My middle-school son summarized after reading three devos: “It’s good. She talks in a way you can understand. It was interesting.” True would be a nice gift for a new believer.
