A whopping 75 percent of all high school students have used alcohol, tobacco or drugs, according to a disturbing new report from the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse. A full fifth of those teens are reportedly addicted. According to the study, the earlier folks abuse drugs or alcohol, the more likely they will become addicted. Ninety percent of adult addicts first started using in high school. Furthermore, 25 percent of youth who drink, smoke or use drugs before age 18 are destined to become addicts by adulthood. By comparison, only one in 25 people who begin using such substances after age 21 become addicts. “What this data show(s) is that any adolescent is at risk of using substances and that it’s preventable,” says Dr. Leslie Walker, president of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine.
