Eighty-year-old James Drain never went to prom when he was in high school, but this year, he got his chance.
Drain attended Albertville High School’s prom with his granddaughter, Joy Webb. She decided to take Drain, whom she calls Poppa, after learning he’d never been before.
“My family is everything to me, and I love him so much, and it’s just like really special to me because I know now many people get to do that,” she told WHNT 19. “I know he loves me, and I love him, and it’s just really neat and special.”
Drain made sure the evening was everything prom should be. He gave Webb a corsage for her wrist, took her to prom in a horse-drawn carriage and made sure to dress for the part.
“This is my first appearance in a tuxedo,” Drain said. “First tuxedo I’ve ever had!” (WHNT 19)
