While experts say childhood obesity is still a major problem in America, a new government study brought a rare bit of good news to the table recently. According to research published by the Journal of the American Medical Association, cholesterol rates among kids ages 6 through 19 have dropped in recent years. While one in nine children had elevated cholesterol levels between 1999 and 2002 (the last time the study was done), only one in 12 had similar cholesterol levels between 2007 and 10. So what’s the cause? Are kids eating better? Exercising more? Alas, no, say the experts. They believe many producers of fatty foods have either eliminated or reduced trans fats in their wares. (AP)
