Summertime’s supposed to be a season filled with baseball, iced tea and barefoot walks. However, for many teens summer may also be a time when they try drugs or alcohol for the first time. On any given day in June or July, more than 11,000 teens between the ages of 12 and 17 will drink an alcoholic beverage for the first time, according to a survey by the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration. That’s way more than the 5,000-8,000 daily first-time users you find in most non-summer months. About 5,000 teens also take their first puff of tobacco during an average summer day, and 4,800 smoke their first marijuana joint. “More free time and less adult supervision can make the summertime an exciting time for many young people, but it can also increase the likelihood of exposure to the dangers of substance abuse,” says Pamela Hyde, administrator for the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration.
