Think college is expensive? Try daycare. According to a study by the National Association of Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies, a year of infant daycare in 36 states is more expensive than a year of public college. In Washington, D.C., parents spend an average of more than $18,000 a year for infant daycare. In these economically troubled times, some parents are trying to defray the cost by enlisting relatives to care for child or by switching shifts: Moms might work in the daytime, for instance, while dads head to work in the evening. “In our budget, it’s the second highest line item…second only to our mortgage,” said Gary Walker, who has two sons in daycare. “An astounding amount of money goes out to care for our children every month.” (Fox News)
